When many people think of Florida, they imagine sandy shorelines or beautiful springs. While Florida certainly boasts a wide selection of beaches and fresh water springs, the state also is host to some beautiful rapids at Hillsborough River State Park. These rapids might not be huge, but they sure are beautiful. Oh, and Florida’s rapids have a unique twist to them – they are surrounded by alligators.
I started visiting this park regularly a number of years ago, and it really is such a beautiful place to visit year-round. I’ve walked The River Rapids Trail countless times, and it never gets old. It’s a really easy, shaded, and short trail that’s ideal for families and pets. Plus, the trailhead is easily accessible from a nearby parking lot.
In addition to the beautiful rapids and lush greenery, Hillsborough River State Park provides some excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Alligators can regularly be spotted across the bank from this trail (in the water or on land) and on a warm sunny morning, you might even get to see a snake. I’ve also actually seen an alligator sunning on a rock in the rapids before (not pictured). How cool is that?
As you plan your trip to Hillsborough River State Park, you’ll want to be certain you are fully prepared for the experience. It’s six dollars per car to enter, and the park is usually open from dawn to dusk. Also, because it’s Florida, it is always a good idea to have insect repellent with you. I have taken a sunset stroll around the park in July before, and the mosquitos nearly carried me away with them. Additionally, you’ll want to bring plenty of drinking water with you if you visit the park during the warmer months of the year.
