This is my first post about St. Augustine? How can that be? As a kid, I grew up spending my summer vacations in this beautiful city. When I was a teenager, my parents bought a vacation condo there. Later, I moved to St. Augustine full-time to go to school. And thank goodness I did, I met one of my favorite people ever in Augy. (Shoutout to Eliz!)
I’ve *almost* always loved St. Augustine. I say almost because there were certain weekends when my twin sister and I were so mad our parents dragged us away from our high school friends to spend family time together at the beach in Augy. The audacity! How dare they? Now Lyd and I look back and think we were damn near crazy. It doesn’t really get any better than St. Augustine.
Our Dad was big into surfing and skating growing up, which surely contributed to his decision to buy a place in St. Augustine. The surfing and skating culture there is a beautiful thing. I have countless memories of skating barefoot down to the beach in my bikini top and board shorts, pretending the asphalt wasn’t burning the living hell out of my left foot. (I’m goofy footed.) No matter how many times I burned my feet on the scorching hot asphalt – even blistering them – I never wore shoes.
About six years ago, my Dad sold our vacation condo. Ever since our Augy home sold, my sister and I have rented a number of different condos and homes to vacation in around St. Augustine Beach. We almost always stay in between D Street and the pier. (It’s our favorite part of the beach.)
We went to St. Augustine last weekend for a break and had such an amazing time. We stayed in the most perfect home and had such a relaxing experience!
If I had to name the most peaceful place I’ve ever been, I would say St. Augustine Beach at sunrise. Whether I’m watching my dog crash into the waves, admiring the dedicated runners, observing the surfers during dawn patrol, or simply staring out into the Atlantic, it’s an incredibly serene experience.
