When you are craving a large, satisfying breakfast or brunch in the Reykjavík area, head to Bergsson Mathús. Friendly staff will be waiting to greet you in this cozy café, and the smell of fresh bread will awaken your senses.
While this café offers a variety of options to choose from, including delicious pastries, I recommend ordering their brunch plate. This delicious meal comes with a soft-boiled egg, fresh sourdough bread, bacon, thin slices of cheese, salad, fruit, yogurt topped with granola, and prosciutto. If you want to dress up your slices of sourdough with jams, butter, or peanut butter, there’s a table inside that serves the sole purpose of hosting an assortment of spreads for your bread.
There’s indoor and outdoor seating available, which I love. In winter, we sit inside the dim-lit café while enjoying a delicious breakfast. During summer, we sit outside to enjoy the cool temperatures while eating our brunch.
Know Before You Go:
+ Bergsson Mathús is one of the restaurants in Reykjavík that opens fairly early in the morning. It’s one of your best bets for an early meal. (PERFECT for travelers who have early morning arrivals in Iceland.)
+ I’m not the only one who is crazy about Bergsson Mathús. This is a popular spot, so there might be a little bit of a line when waiting to order your food. Fear not though, the line moves quickly — the staff will be with you in no time.
+ If you aren’t hungry enough for the brunch plate, you can try their bread plate. That was the first breakfast I had at Bergsson Mathús, and it was delicious. The meal doesn’t come with all of the options the brunch plate includes, but it does come with fresh sourdough bread, a soft-boiled egg, cheese, and prosciutto. The bread plate is a great option for those trying to save a buck, as it’s much cheaper than the brunch plate.

+ When you order a regular coffee, you’ll have access to their unlimited, pour-it-yourself brewed coffee. This is a particularly awesome offering for those who are visiting after a long travel day or are dealing with jet lag. (Me! See picture below.)
