I’ve been obsessed with Sandholt since my first visit there in 2015. Auður from I Heart Reykjavík had suggested the bakery, and wow was I happy I heeded her advice.
Our first experience at Sandholt was stopping in to get a couple of takeaway sandwiches and a single pastry to enjoy as we headed to the countryside. Everything was phenomenal. It was love at first bite.
Since our first Sandholt experience, we’ve been back countless times. I can’t even recall how many times we went there during our last trip to Reykjavík. At this point, I’ve had a wide selection of both their sweet and savory foods. I’ve even bought loaves of bread from them to enjoy back at my apartment in Reykjavík.
My favorite savory foods there are definitely the sandwiches available at the counter when you walk in. I’ve had a few different kinds, and they all are delicious.
I’m OBSESSED with their cinnamon danishes (seen above, next to the sandwich). They are buttery and full of cinnamon flavor without being too sweet. When it comes to sweet treats, I’m a sucker for their chocolate croissants and epla lengja, which is an apple danish. Honestly, their epla lengja is one of the best pastries I’ve ever had. And, they’re huge! Each one is around $10 USD, which I think is a fair price.
If you like bread, I suggest picking up a loaf or two to keep at your apartment or hotel. During the wintertime, they have their Christmas Bread available and WOW is it good. I ate an entire loaf in about four days.
In the event you are searching for larger, decadent treats, Sandholt has those, too!

While it’s convenient to stop in and pick up sandwiches and sweets for takeaway, it’s really a great experience to sit down and enjoy a leisurely lunch (or other meal) at Sandholt. You can order anything from behind the counter as well as any items from their menu. They also offer coffee, tea, and even some alcoholic beverages.
